Expo 2010 national pavilion

I made this project as a proposal for national pavilion of Serbia, in Shanghai 2010.

My main aim was to achieve an innovative and interesting shape with minimum budget. This is why I decided to assign the function of “shape creator” and shape-forming tool to the roof – enveloped space frame. The other part of the object will be simple curtain wall. Also the floor plan area is quite modest – around 125 m2. Again I tried to push the project to its limits – by applying the labyrinth shape of the floor plan – this increased it’s useful space area. Interior labyrinth walls are partly covered with LCD screens.

Space frame construction

Cladding – point supported (stainless steel-iron Spider Fixing): insulated glass panels with Low-E coating, and aluminum panels. Panel dimensions vary for each module, with maximum size of 1741x1437mm.
space frame members: Rolled cross-sections RO Mannesmann (Fine Grain Steel S 355 N), upper chord: 51x10mm, diagonals: 51×5,6mm, lower chord: 48,3×6,3mm
nodes – Mero KK-Ball Node System. Custom made for each node, as angles between members are unique.

Support nodes – Mero custom made hinged, regarding X;Y;Z, for support reactions (in Kilo Newtons) : “a” support:  150,89;-50,54;-187,57 “b” support: -77,60;-76,93;-111,71 “c” support: -94,91;115,47;-152,47
Connection between support nodes and foundations will be achieved with metal plate 30cm in diameter for all three supports, but with different thickness:  “a” support: 25mm, “b” support: 19mm, “c” support: 22mm. Cement Mortar, 2cm thick goes below the metal plate. support metal plates are anchored with following types of bolts: “a” support: 3 bolts M20x80mm, “b” support: 2 bolts M20x80mm, “c” support: 3 bolts M20x80mm. Bolts steel strength category is 6.8.


Soil: sandy clay: G(self weight)= 26.5 KN/m3, Phi (coefficient of friction)=33°, q(Gross Allowable Bearing Pressure)=140 KN/m2, Depth of foundations = 1150mm.
All three foundations are single foot made of reinforced concrete. Rebars made of Fine Grain Steel S 420 N, concrete – C20/25. Foundation dimensions (related to  X,Y,Z+pedestal height directions, in millimeter): “a” 3200;2450;1000+200, “b” 2400;2400;600+600, “c”  2450;2850;800+400.
layer of non-reinforced concrete with thickness of 50mm and area offset 50mm from foundation edges goes under each foundation. A layer of gravel 100mm thick goes below last layer.
I used the same diameter of rebars for each part of the foundations.:

I did not calculate the tie beams between foundations, as I do not know how to calculate them! I just drew them with some imaginary measurements for both concrete beam cross-sections and rebars.
